Is there anything of relevance to Little Mill in the article by Fred Hunter in Great Western Railway Journal Volume 2 No 9, A signalman's day at Monmouth (Troy)?

There's history and detail of shuffling trains in the station. The passengers from Pontypool Road are remembered as diesel cars - there is a photo of no. 20. The Pontypool freight arrived at 11.10 and departed 17.00 In between it ran trips to Redbrook and May Hill and shunted the yard. Also Welsh freight for Monmouth was routed via PPool, the Chepstow freight often terminating down the Wye Valley. So PPool freight might be relativley heavy. Photos show PPool freight in the yard with a 57xx but no number visible or noted.

More good information and of particular inerest to me is the bit about diesel railcars.

I was told (some time ago) that railcars were virtually unknown lower down than Cheltenham, but I found a photo of one at Tintern station. Now it seems likely that they also came as far as Pontypool (at least). Does the timetable indicate this?

One other queery, Dave, to what date does the article refer ?

Jeff

I think you'll find the article date on the LMJ page in this website. Diesel railcars were certainly a feature at PPrd, we have photos of No 31, which is the one we want Bill to do the kit for, so if you know a source for the GA's of this vehicle, please pass them on.

See you Friday

I see that Wild Swan have announced the second book in the North and West Route series - I see if I can get a copy when we visit Newbury.

Also have we checked out the Middleton Press  Shrewsbury To Ludlow or  Ludlow To Hereford for likely looking trains?

Did the 45xx work through LMJ? Perhaps the Monmouth freight?

WE HAVEN'T LOOKED AT THOSE other mIDDLETON pRESS BOOKS.

45xx tanks were not common at PPRD as far as I know. They were used on the Ppool to Cokeworks Jct (PPridd) freight acccording to John Drayton in Across the Footplate Years. He was a PPRD driver who wrote a lot for mags. Photos in that book too. I'll bring it down the club as there's probably other LM relevant stuff in it.

The older children of Little Mill attend the school where I work. So I put an appeal for information into the Christmas newsletter to parents. There may be grandparents or other relatives out there with something.

Jeff, according to The Ross Monmouth and Pontypool Road line (Stanley C Jenkins, Oakwood) diesel railcars 4, 13, 14, 27 and 30 also ran on the line.

Ahh, so number 30 was just one of several. Do we know if any of the others are already available as a kit? Save Bill having to etch one...
