Loco's of Hazelhurst

The Loco's and Stock of Hazelhurst

It has been suggested that a page showing the Locomotives and perhaps some of the stock that can be seen on Hazelhurst would be a good idea. So here it is. Photos will be added from time to time and it does not pretend to be exhaustive in its coverage. It just shows what's about.

When I have the information I'll put up a few details about them.

Wainwright P

Builder: Tony Bennett
Kit: Meteor
Pick-Up: Scrapers
Suspension: P4/4mm type, Spring steel wire slipped into fine-bore tube soldered to the vertically-moving axle bearings and pivoted on a  1/3:2/3:2/3:1/3 basis. Simple, and it works here.
Motor Gearbox: 1833, Fold-Up, 40-1.

Loco is very heavily weighted and can haul long trains, which is certainly more than the prototype could do. DCC fitted, of course,

Adams G6

Builder: Tony Bennett
Kit: Connoisseur
Pick-Up: Split axles
Suspension: Sprung
Motor Gearbox:

Fold-Up. 54:1. Mashima 1883

This loco was the subject of some experimentation. The initial object was to have as heavy a flywheel as possible. One was prepared which actually not only occupied the usual position but also encased part of the motor as well. As a flywheel it did work well. It was certainly heavy but problems with getting it balanced made it less than ideal. It was taken out.

The first springing system was the same as that used by the P class loco - already described. As a suspension system this worked too, but actually providing reliable scraper pick ups defeated me. Consequently the whole lot was ripped out, Slaters Plastic hornblocks were fitted (screwed and proper Araldited), together with the appopriate bearings and the pick-up problem solved by using split axles prepared in the usual manner. It works.

The model also has what the prototype possessed and what I assume to be the shunter's footsteps fitted at the rear of the loco underneath the bunker sides.

Wainwright "C"

Builder: Steve Neill
Kit: Javelin
Pick-Up: Split axles, Loco/Tender
Suspension: Rigid
Motor Gearbox: Fold-Up. 40;1. Mashima 1883

Just to show that Steve Neill isn't the only 7mm builder I enclose two photographs of stock built by Richard Price.

Photo. Richard Price.

Builder: Richard Price
Kit: DJH Beginners Kit
Pick-Up: Wipers
Suspension: Rigid
Motor Gearbox: Canon/DJH Worm & Gear Wheel

This 03 has been fitted with a Lenz Decoder.

Kit: Parkside Dundas

None!

This ex-GW Plywood Covered Goods Wagon,W12326 is painted in early BR Freight Stock Bauxite - Railmatch 323. Richard admits that the painting isn't quite finished because the wheels rims have to be blackened. Three link couplings at present, but they may be altered "in the exigiencies of the service".

The Bone Shed of the Tiger Glue Works makes an alluring backdrop.

We've already had a picture of the M7, so this week I thought I'd include the Loco and Maunsell Pull-Push Set. (Pull-Push was the preferred Southern nomenclature) . In actual fact I haven't done Steve any favours with this shot because 30055 is in fact Pull-Push fitted, courtesy of Shedmaster, but the gear's all on t'other side.

Builder:   Steve Neill
Kit:

Westdale

The glazing and some other details on the Driving Third still have to be fitted. That's a G6 sharing the Bay area with the Pull-Push and that Jinty's poking its nose in on the end loading bay.

Builder: Steve Neill
Kit: Finney/Shedmaster
Pick-Up: Wipers
Suspension: Compensated
Motor Gearbox: ABC/Canon

There's a Maunsell Push-Pull Set to go with this little Motor fitted M7 beauty.

Just what a Jinty is doing in deepest Southern Territory is anyone's guess. Probably just took Steve Neill's fancy, so he built it. But be aware. You are looking at a prize winning Loco. No, we couldn't believe it either.

Builder: Steve Neill
Kit: Connoisseur
Pick-Up: Wipers
Suspension: Sprung Outer Wheels
Motor Gearbox: Slaters Motor/Gearbox

A Q, and still with a wonky smokebox door, and still with a TV camera up the spout.

Builder: Steve Neill
Kit: Hayward/Shedmaster
Pick-Up: Split Axle on Tender only
Suspension: Sprung Loco & Tender
Motor Gearbox: ABC/Canon

The bar across the buffers are part of our club built couplers. We now seem to have moved over to Dingham's so it is due for replacement.

An N, which runs as beautifully as it looks. Wish I could do half as well!

Builder: Steve Neill
Kit: David Andrews
Pick-Up: American
Suspension: Compensated
Motor Gearbox: ABC/Canon

Just a bit of whimsy on my part to see if I could get the valve gear of the N
